During a credit card transaction PayPal asks its members to enter their card verification number when registering a credit card. The card verification number is located within a string of 19 slanted numbers within a horizontal band on the back of the card; it is the last three digits on the far right.

Mastercard and Visa place the card verification number on the back of the card. The card verification number is a security feature placed on cards to ensure that the person entering the credit card numbers during a transaction online or over the phone does in fact have possession of that credit card.

For a visual display of how to find the card verification numbers, follow these simple steps:

1. Login to your PayPal account at www.paypal.com.
2. Click on the "Profile" link at the top of the page.
3. Click on the "Credit Card" link on the left of the page.
4. Click on the blue link that says "Card verification number" on the right of the page.
5. A visual display of the back of a card will show you the location of the card verification number for your card.

If a card verification number is not displayed on the back of your card, you will need to use another credit card on the account.

They are currently working on an alternative verification method for members who attempted to register a card, but who do not have a card verification number listed on the back of their cards.
